What is Rhinoplasty?
Are you happy with the size and shape of your nose? If your answer is anything but “yes”, you may be able to benefit from a rhinoplasty. This procedure improves the size, shape, and symmetry of the nose to bring it into better proportion with the face. When performed by a skilled, double board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Willis, rhinoplasty can be a life-enhancing choice.
Who is a Candidate?
Teens and adults can benefit from rhinoplasty surgery. However, the nose must be fully developed, which is around the age of 14 for girls and 16 for boys. For patients of all ages, realistic expectations are important, as this procedure cannot give you a “perfect” nose, nor can it give you the same nose someone else has. For more information about this procedure and if it is right for you, give us a call to schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Willis.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
Rhinoplasty can be highly individualized to meet the needs of each unique patient. To achieve natural-looking and beautiful results, there are two main techniques used including an open rhinoplasty and a closed rhinoplasty.
Open Rhinoplasty
A small incision is created under the nose between the nostrils. This allows for Dr. Willis to have better access to the internal nasal structures to sculpt the nose. This technique is often used for patients who require more extensive nose reshaping.
Closed Rhinoplasty
Incisions are created inside of the nostrils, so there is no visible scarring. This technique is often used for those who need minor adjustments to achieve results.
Recovery
Following your rhinoplasty, you may have a splint placed on your nose or packing placed inside of your nose to support your nose during healing. Initial swelling will go down during the first few weeks, however, it may take up to one year for full results to become noticeable. Dr. Willis will give you instructions on how to care for your surgical site, which medications to take, concerns to keep an eye out for, and more. Most patients can return to work or school after 1-2 weeks, and most normal activities can be resumed after three weeks.
