What is Skin Cancer Reconstruction?
When an individual is diagnosed with skin cancer, their doctor may recommend surgery as the best option for removing cancer and preventing cancer from spreading. Depending on the type of skin cancer and the amount of tissue that needs to be removed around the cancer, reconstructive surgery may be recommended to replace the tissue and minimize scarring.
One of the most effective treatment options for most types of skin cancer is called Mohs surgery, during which layers of the cancerous tissue are shaved away and examined under a microscope until no cancerous tissue is left. Dr. Willis may coordinate with a Mohs dermatologist to assist in complex wound closure on the face when appropriate.

View Before and After ImagesIn other cases, skin cancer removal using excision may be used. When performed by a double board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Willis, skin cancer can be designed and excised in a way that allows for a minimal scar that hides in the body’s natural lines and shadows.
In cases where a skin cancer lesion is especially large, a local flap may be used to reconstruct the area. To achieve this, healthy adjacent tissue is repositioned over the wound. There are several different types of local flap procedures to reconstruct certain areas of the face and/or body, which Dr. Willis will describe to you during your consultation. A skin graft may sometimes be used instead of a local flap, which is an area of skin that is removed from one area of the body and relocated to the site of the wound.

After skin cancer reconstruction you may experience redness and soreness at the incision sites. Dr. Willis will give you information regarding how to properly care for your surgical site, how to take or apply medications, when you can return to light activity, and more. Healing may continue for many weeks as the incision line mend. It may take more than a year for some incision lines to fade. Be sure to avoid sun exposure, which can make scarring worse, as well as increase your risk of developing skin cancer again in the future.
