About Botox® in Charlottesville

Are you beginning to notice pesky lines and wrinkles on your forehead and around your eyes? If so, it may be time for a Charlottesville Botox® appointment! Botox® is an injectable neurotoxin that contains botulinum toxin type A. It works by temporarily blocking nurse impulses to certain facial muscles, causing them to relax. This smooths the look of dynamic wrinkles, or those that form on the skin due to repeated facial movements and the breakdown of collagen as you age. Dynamic wrinkles tend to form in areas like the eyebrows or around the eyes.

Botox in Charlottesville also prevents facial muscles from further developing creases and fine lines in these areas when used as a preventive treatment. It’s the most popular facial rejuvenation treatment performed by cosmetic surgeons each year – in fact, at our Charlottesville, Virginia office, it’s one of our signature medical spa treatments.

Who is a Candidate?

Men and women age 18 years and older who wish to smooth wrinkles on their upper face for a more relaxed, youthful appearance can often benefit from Botox® injections. If you have excessive sagging skin, wrinkles, or laxity in your facial profile, Dr. Willis can assess your candidacy for a facial plastic surgery procedure like a facelift or brow lift. While Botox is temporary, a surgical procedure can produce more permanent and transformative results for aging skin.

While Botox® can benefit many individuals, you should not receive this treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are allergic to any of the ingredients in Botox®, or have a history of severe allergies. Dr. Willis can discuss the risks and benefits to help you make an informed choice. Many patients combine their Botox injections with dermal fillers to further enhance their facial profile. The best way to determine if you are a candidate for Botox or dermal fillers is to contact us to schedule an initial consultation at our office today.

BOTOX® TREATMENTS in Charlottesville

Botox® is a non-surgical treatment and is completed during an office visit at our plastic surgeon-owned medspa. Before your treatment, you will have a consultation with Dr. Willis and our injector to discuss your aesthetic goals and concerns.

To begin treatment, you will be offered a topical numbing cream which can help to make sure you are comfortable during the injection. Next, your injector will mark the areas to be treated, and Botox® will be injected using a small needle. Treatments are generally quick, taking about 15-30 minutes to complete depending on the amount of correction desired.

Botox® Recovery

There is no downtime needed following Botox® treatments, so you can return to your normal activities right away. However, we do recommend avoiding strenuous activity, exercising, and consuming alcohol for 12-24 hours after treatments for best results. It’s essential to keep your head upright and avoid bending over for the first four hours, which can exacerbate swelling and compromise your results. You can expect the most common side effects like mild swelling, bruising, and redness to resolve with time.

Results will become noticeable after 3-7 days after a single treatment and can last for 3-6 months, but results can vary based on a variety of factors. You’ll enjoy a noticeable reduction in facial wrinkles and frown lines with a smooth, youthful look to the skin.

I have had the best experience with Dr. Willis and Leah. I have had filler, Dysport, and I've been under the knife with Dr. Willis and I've been so happy with all of my results. I actually feel like a part of their family, I can call whenever I need anything and they both make me feel like they care about me and my results.

Dr. Willis and his staff couldn’t be more helpful and supportive. This has been the most pleasant experience and I am so pleased with the results and it’s only been a week. The staff at the surgery center as well was wonderful and put all my fears to rest. I highly recommend anyone who is thinking of a procedure Dr. Willis and his staff provide you with all the information you need. Wish I had done it sooner.

Nothing but praise for Charlottesville Plastic Surgery. Dr. Willis explained everything he needed to do clearly and his work was top-notch. When needed, he made an immediate referral for me and explained exactly what I would expect from that. Great communication, efficient office.

I am over the moon with my results from Dr. Willis after a breast lift and an abdominoplasty. Dr. Willis and his team are so easy to work with. He listened to what I wanted and gave me beautiful results- better than I could have even hoped for. If you’re thinking about getting a procedure done with Dr. Willis my advice would be DO IT!

Frequently Asked Questions About Botox

Can Botox age you?

Botox can slow the aging process of the skin by limiting dynamic movement of the skin and therefore preventing the formation of wrinkles. It does not speed up the aging process.

Can Botox cause weight gain?

Botox has not been shown to cause weight gain.

Can Botox lift eyebrows?

Subtle Botox placement by a trained professional can lift the lateral eyebrows. This is called a chemical brow lift.

Does Botox make you look older after it wears off?

Botox does not make you look older as it wears off. You may perceive that you look older because the muscles of the forehead will start moving again and might cause the wrinkles that you treated in the first place.

Does Botox make you shiny?

Botox does not make you shiny. Shiny skin can be caused by excessive micro needling, chemical peels, etc. The shiny skin comes from changing the quantity and type of collagen in your skin. Botox just prevents muscles from contracting in your upper face, so unless you are very animated in your brows or furrows, people should not notice that you had botox.

How long does Botox last?

Botox can last, on average, from 3 to 6 months depending on the person and the amount injected.

Is 50 too old for Botox?

There is no upper age limit for Botox. If you notice wrinkles between your brows or forehead, then Botox can help. Keep in mind that Botox might make your brows feel heavier, and in older patients with lower set eyebrows and/or excess upper eyelid skin, this can be exacerbated.

What age should I start Botox?

There is no set age to start Botox. Botox is a great way to prevent wrinkles before they permanently change the skin. If you think you may be ready for Botox, consult your health professional.

What are the bad side effects of Botox?

There are no major bad side effects of Botox. You may have an allergic reaction to the Botox, but this is extremely rare. If injected improperly, it may make your upper eyelid droop temporarily. This is not to be confused with a heavy feeling eyebrow.

What do I need to know before getting botox?

Botox is really safe and typically does not need any prep by you, as the patient. Ask your healthcare professional about the risks of Botox at your initial consultation.

What is Botox used for?

Botox is used for many cosmetic and medical purposes. Botox paralyzes muscles, so can by used for medical conditions ranging from fissures to migraines. Most commonly, it is used for cosmetic purposes to prevent and/or correct upper face wrinkles.

Can I go for a walk after Botox?

You can perform light exercise after Botox.

Can I have wine after Botox?

You can have wine after Botox. Alcohol can thin the blood, so heavy drinking prior to your Botox injections can increase your risk of bruising. Alcohol after injections should have minimal to no influence on your bruising.

Should I move my face after Botox?

You can move your face as you normally would after Botox. You do not need to do anything different with your facial muscles after Botox injections.
