What is Rhinoplasty?

Are you happy with the size and shape of your nose? If your answer is anything but “yes”, you may be able to benefit from a rhinoplasty. This procedure improves the size, shape, and symmetry of the nose to bring it into better proportion with the face. When performed by a skilled, double board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Willis, rhinoplasty can be a life-enhancing choice.

A rhinoplasty can improve:

  • A nose that is disproportionate to the rest of the face.
  • Visible humps or depressions on the bridge of the nose.
  • An enlarged, dropping, or hooked nasal tip.
  • Large, wide, or upturned nostrils.
  • Nasal asymmetry.

Who is a Candidate?

Teens and adults can benefit from rhinoplasty surgery. However, the nose must be fully developed, which is around the age of 14 for girls and 16 for boys. For patients of all ages, realistic expectations are important, as this procedure cannot give you a “perfect” nose, nor can it give you the same nose someone else has. The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty can be highly individualized to meet the needs of each unique patient. To achieve natural-looking and beautiful results, there are two main techniques used including an open rhinoplasty and a closed rhinoplasty.

Open Rhinoplasty

A small incision is created under the nose between the nostrils. This allows for Dr. Willis to have better access to the internal nasal structures to sculpt the nose. This technique is often used for patients who require more extensive nose reshaping.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Incisions are created inside of the nostrils, so there is no visible scarring. This technique is often used for those who need minor adjustments to achieve results.

I am over the moon with my results from Dr. Willis after a breast lift and an abdominoplasty. Dr. Willis and his team are so easy to work with. Dr. Willis and his staff were amazing! Very calm, clean and professional atmosphere. They were inviting and attentive. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I went in for a consultation and had my lip filler procedure in the same day. Quick and painless. The results are perfect. I highly recommend Dr.Willis and taking advantage of the referral program. 10/10!

Recovery

Following your rhinoplasty, you may have a splint placed on your nose or packing placed inside of your nose to support your nose during healing. Initial swelling will go down during the first few weeks, however, it may take up to one year for full results to become noticeable. Dr. Willis will give you instructions on how to care for your surgical site, which medications to take, concerns to keep an eye out for, and more. Most patients can return to work or school after 1-2 weeks, and most normal activities can be resumed after three weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rhinoplasty

What is rhinoplasty and how can it enhance my facial appearance?

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that improves the size, shape, and balance of the nose to harmonize with other facial features. It can correct humps, a drooping tip, wide nostrils, and asymmetry.

Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty at Charlottesville Plastic Surgery?

Good candidates are teens and adults with fully developed noses who want cosmetic improvements or functional correction. Candidates should have realistic expectations and be in good overall health.

What’s the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty techniques?

Open rhinoplasty uses a small external incision for access and is ideal for extensive reshaping. Closed rhinoplasty hides incisions inside the nostrils and suits patients needing minor adjustments.

How long does recovery take after rhinoplasty?

Initial swelling typically decreases in the first weeks, with most patients returning to work within 1 to 2 weeks. Full results can continue refining for up to a year as swelling gradually resolves.

Does rhinoplasty address breathing issues as well as cosmetic concerns?

Yes. Rhinoplasty can improve nasal function by correcting structural issues that contribute to breathing difficulty while also reshaping the nose for aesthetic balance.

How much does rhinoplasty cost and does Charlottesville Plastic Surgery offer pricing details?

Costs vary per individual case. Charlottesville Plastic Surgery provides transparent pricing and individualized estimates during consultations.

What are the common risks or side effects associated with rhinoplasty?

Like any surgery, rhinoplasty carries risks including swelling, bruising, bleeding, and infection. A personalized consultation will cover potential complications and aftercare to minimize risk.

Will a rhinoplasty leave visible scars?

With closed rhinoplasty, incisions are entirely inside the nostrils with no visible scars. Open rhinoplasty may leave a small scar beneath the nose, which typically fades over time.

How long before I see my final rhinoplasty results?

While swelling reduces significantly in the first weeks, subtle changes can continue up to 12 months before final results are fully visible. Patience during healing is essential.

Are non-surgical rhinoplasty options available?

Yes. Non-surgical (liquid) rhinoplasty with dermal fillers can temporarily smooth bumps and refine contours without surgery for those with minor concerns.
